Alcohol Prices in Bergen (Beer, Wine & Bar Prices Guide)

One of the most common questions I get from people planning a trip to Norway is:
“How expensive is alcohol in Bergen?”
Norway has a reputation for being one of the most expensive countries in the world, especially when it comes to beer, wine and spirits. Because of this, many visitors want to know roughly what they will pay before they arrive.
To make things easier, I’ve put together a simple guide to alcohol prices in Bergen, based on what you can expect to pay in bars and restaurants around the city.
Prices can vary depending on the location, the type of bar, and whether you are in a tourist area or a more local neighbourhood. The prices below are typical averages based on what you’ll see in Bergen city centre.

Why Alcohol Is Expensive in Norway
Alcohol prices in Norway are high mainly because of government taxes and strict alcohol regulations.
These taxes are designed to reduce alcohol consumption, which means drinks in bars, restaurants and shops cost much more than in many other European countries.
Visitors are often surprised when they see the prices, but once you understand the system it makes more sense.

Where Alcohol Is Most Expensive in Bergen
Location makes a big difference to the price of drinks.
If you are drinking close to the Bergen Fish Market, one of the most popular tourist areas in the city, you will usually pay the highest prices.
Many bars around the harbour and main squares charge more because they rely heavily on tourists.
However, if you walk 5–10 minutes away from the busiest areas, you can often find much cheaper drinks. A beer that costs 130 NOK in a tourist bar might only cost 90 NOK in a smaller local bar just a few streets away.

Local Beer in Bergen
The most famous beer in Bergen is Hansa Beer.
It has been brewed in the city since the late 1800s and many locals — known as Bergensere — are very proud of it.
Because it is brewed locally, Hansa is usually the cheapest beer available in bars and restaurants. It’s a light, crisp lager and a great choice if you want to try a traditional Bergen beer while visiting the city.

Typical range: 80 – 130 NOK

Buying Alcohol in Shops in Norway
Alcohol can also be bought in supermarkets and special government shops.
Supermarkets in Norway only sell drinks up to 4.7% alcohol, which includes most standard beers and ciders.
For stronger drinks such as wine, spirits, and stronger beers, you must visit Vinmonopolet, the government-owned alcohol store found across Norway.
Prices in Vinmonopolet are usually much cheaper than bars and restaurants.

Tips for Saving Money on Drinks in Bergen
If you want to enjoy a drink in Bergen without spending too much, here are a few simple tips:
1. Avoid the main tourist areas
Bars close to the harbour and major attractions usually charge more.
2. Look for local pubs
Small neighbourhood bars often have better prices.
3. Drink local beer
Local brands like Hansa are usually the cheapest option.
4. Check happy hour deals
Some bars offer discounted drinks earlier in the evening.

Is Alcohol in Bergen Worth the Price?
Even though drinks are expensive, many visitors still enjoy experiencing the bar culture in Bergen. The city has a great mix of traditional pubs, craft beer bars and cosy places where you can relax after exploring.
Trying a local beer while sitting in a bar and watching the rain fall outside is a very Bergen experience.

So thats 47,90 or £3.40 / €4 / $4.40.

Also you will notice a Litre price too so you can compare the cost of different size beers, and what they each work out per litre.
