Dressing for Bergen: A Month-by-Month Guide

Bergen is beautiful all year round, but the weather? Let’s just say it has a mind of its own. If you’re visiting, knowing what to wear can make the difference between a soggy tourist and a happy explorer. Here’s a month-by-month guide to keep you comfortable while enjoying Norway’s rain capital.

Here’s a quick guide to what to wear.

January – February ❄️

Cold, wet, and sometimes snowy. Bring a warm winter jacket, gloves, hat, scarf, and waterproof boots. Layers are key because indoor heating is strong. It tends to snow Mid February so be warned.

March – April 🌱

Spring is trying… but the rain still wins. Pack a rain jacket, waterproof shoes, and light layers. A wool sweater is perfect for chilly evenings. In recent years there has been a lot of snow in March so check the weather forecast daily.

May – June 🌸

Bergen wakes up! Days get longer, flowers bloom, and the city feels alive. You’ll need a lighter jacket, comfy shoes, sunglasses (yes, sometimes!), and always rain gear. Locals switch to sneakers – but keep a waterproof backup.

July – August ☀️🌦️

The warmest months, but don’t expect Mediterranean weather. Think T-shirts, shorts for sunny spells, and a light sweater for evenings. Absolutely bring a packable raincoat – showers come and go quickly.

September – October 🍂

Crisp air, autumn colors, and yes, more rain. Pack a warm waterproof jacket, boots, and cozy layers. Scarves and hats are back in fashion (and necessity).

November – December 🎄

Dark nights, festive lights, and cold winds. Bring a thick coat, waterproof boots, gloves, and wool everything. Perfect time for those happy moments in cafés.

💡 Local Tip:
There’s a Bergen saying: “There’s no bad weather, only bad clothing.” If you remember that, you’ll fit right in.

So whether it’s August sunshine or December drizzle, pack smart, dress in layers, and don’t forget your raincoat – because in Bergen, it’s practically a fashion statement.
