Fish Market

 

The fish market in Bergen is one of Norway's most famous outdoor markets. 

It sells a variety of goods but its most famous for its Fresh Seafood.

 

The fish market in Bergen has a charming location right in the heart of the city between Vestland's fjords and the seven mountains. 

Fresh fish and seafood, locally produced farm food such as fruit, berries and vegetables are all sold at Fisketorget. There are also several restaurants that serve a wide selection of seafood. 

Inside the new foodhall you will also find the local Tourist Information office. This is the part of the Fisketorget that is indoors and is open all year round, while the outdoor market opens on 1 May every year. You will also find a public toilet here, something that is very very lacking in Bergen.

 

The selection of goods is pretty good. You can buy locally caught crab and fish and also try Polse ( sausage) made from Reindeer. Some of the stalls also sell whale meat so please be aware of this if your against this.

A few tips.

Although the Fish Market itself is buzzing with tourists its not usually visited by locals due to the higher prices. Be aware that it’s the main tourist area so be prepared to pay just a little bit more for your food or coffee. Also when buying crab claws, ask them to pour the water out before they weigh them. It does make a difference to the price.

 

Fish and Chips is around £20 so be warned.

Use the public toilets (small fee) as there aren’t any others in the city.

 

Despite the higher prices, the fish market really is worth a visit, and is a very nice place to eat and take in the vibrant busy atmosphere. Coffee and a cinnamon bun are a very affordable option to refuel you for the rest of your day, and it won’t break the bank either.
