First impressions
Sitting on the Nordnes peninsula, Akvariet i Bergen is one of Bergen’s most well-known attractions—and for good reason. It’s compact, easy to navigate, and packed with a wide variety of animals, from penguins and sea lions to tropical fish, reptiles, and even Snakes.
The layout makes it a very accessible experience, especially for families, and you can comfortably explore everything in about 1–3 hours.

Ticket prices (2026)
Let’s start with the key thing most people care about—cost:
Adults: 415 NOK
Children (3–15): 265 NOK
Students / under 27 / seniors: 280 NOK
Family (2 adults + 2 children): 1,145 NOK
Extra child: 190 NOK (Akvariet)
There are sometimes reduced afternoon tickets and discounts, but overall these are the standard entry prices.
💸 Is it worth it?
Honestly, this is where the biggest criticism comes in: it feels overpriced.
Even reviews from visitors often mention that the cost is high compared to other aquariums.
For what you get—while enjoyable—it’s not a massive aquarium, and the price can feel steep, especially for families. If you’re paying full price without discounts, you’ll likely notice it.
What makes it great (especially for kids)
Where the aquarium really shines is as a family experience.
There’s a huge variety of animals (over 300 species)
Interactive exhibits and feeding sessions keep things engaging
A strong educational focus on marine life and environmental issues
For children, it’s fantastic. It’s one of those places where kids can both learn and genuinely enjoy seeing animals up close, from sharks gliding overhead to penguins waddling around outside.
It strikes a good balance between entertainment and education, making it one of the better kid-friendly attractions in Bergen.
🦭 The sea lion show – a highlight of the visit
One of the standout experiences at Akvariet i Bergen is definitely the sea lion show (or more accurately, the feeding and training sessions).
These take place outdoors in the main pool area and happen regularly throughout the day, often alongside other feeding demonstrations.
The sea lions are incredibly energetic and clearly well-trained. During the session, you’ll see them:
Respond to commands from the trainers
Perform simple tricks and movements
Interact playfully with the keepers
Dive and glide through the water with impressive speed
It’s not a flashy “theme park” style show, but more of a training and feeding demonstration, which actually makes it feel more authentic and educational.
For kids especially, this is a major highlight. The animals are full of personality, and it’s one of the few moments where the whole crowd tends to stop and really engage.
Overall, the sea lion show is one of the best parts of the aquarium and definitely something you should plan your visit around.
Heres one of them warming up before the show:
The downsides
No attraction is perfect, and this one definitely has a few drawbacks:
🐍 The reptile section (especially snakes)
One of the more frustrating issues is the visibility in the reptile area.
Because of the humidity, the glass often steams up, which makes it difficult to see inside the enclosures. That means the snakes—arguably one of the highlights—can be hard to spot or barely visible at all.
For something included in the ticket price, it’s a bit disappointing.
📏 Size vs price
While there’s a good variety, the aquarium itself isn’t huge. Some visitors feel they’ve seen everything quite quickly, which adds to the sense that the entry price is a bit too high.
It does have over 60 large and small aquariums.
Food & café – a pleasant surprise
One thing that genuinely stands out in a positive way is the food pricing.
Unlike many tourist attractions, where food is notoriously expensive, the café here is reasonably priced.
Compared to other attractions (especially in Norway), the food feels like good value, which is a nice surprise and makes it easier to spend a few hours there without breaking the bank.
Overall verdict
Akvariet i Bergen is a fun, educational, and family-friendly attraction—but with a noticeable catch.
👍 Pros
Excellent for kids
Wide variety of animals
Educational and engaging exhibits
Food prices are surprisingly reasonable
👎 Cons
Overpriced entry tickets
Some exhibits (like snakes) are hard to see due to humidity
Not as large as you might expect
Final thoughts
Overall, my visit to Akvariet i Bergen was genuinely enjoyable. It was fascinating to explore the variety of fish and animals, and some of the highlights—like the lively penguins and playful sea lions—really stood out and added to the experience.
The staff we came across were friendly and welcoming, and perhaps the biggest indicator of its success was seeing how much the kids around the aquarium were enjoying themselves. It clearly does a great job of engaging younger visitors while still being interesting for adults.
That said, the price is hard to ignore. It does feel a bit steep considering the size and scope of the attraction. But putting that aside, everything else about the visit was worthwhile, and it’s still a place I’d recommend—especially for families.

We visited here on a Sunday in April 2026, two teenage daughters and one adult. We had 25% off with the Bergen Card. We stayed for about 5 hours. Watched all the keeper shows and thoroughly enjoyed it. The otters and sea lions were brilliant. The restaurant food didn't appeal to us but we got some fairly priced snacks from the canteen. The aquarium is a similar size to ones we've visited in the UK. Well worth a visit it our opinion.
