Bergen Fish Market – Worth Visiting?

If you're visiting Bergen, the Fish Market (Fisketorget) is one of the city's most famous attractions. Sitting right on the waterfront between Bryggen and the harbour, it's a small market, very touristy, and often more expensive than local supermarkets—but it's still well worth stopping by, especially if it's your first visit to Bergen.

The market has been a meeting place for fishermen and traders since the 1200s, making it one of Norway's oldest marketplaces. Today you'll find fresh salmon, king crab, prawns, cod, whale meat, caviar, local cheeses, berries, souvenirs and plenty of seafood dishes cooked while you wait. Even if you don't plan on buying anything, it's a great place to wander around and soak up the atmosphere.

I'll be adding photos below showing the current prices, so you can get a realistic idea of what to expect before you visit.

Opening Hours

Indoor Fish Market (Mathallen)

  • Monday – Saturday: 09:00 – 21:30

  • Sunday: 10:00 – 21:30

The outdoor market operates during the main tourist season, from 1 May until 30 September, with the busiest trading taking place between 10:00 and 18:00. During the winter months, the outdoor stalls disappear, but the indoor market remains open all year.

Is It Worth Visiting?

Absolutely. While the Fish Market is relatively small and definitely aimed at tourists, it's one of Bergen's most iconic sights. You don't need to spend a fortune—simply walking around, admiring the incredible seafood displays, watching the chefs prepare fresh meals and taking in the harbour views makes it a worthwhile stop.

Billy's Tip: If you're on a budget, visit the Fish Market for the experience, then grab lunch at one of Bergen's many nearby cafés or bakeries. You'll still enjoy the atmosphere without spending a fortune.
