Bergen is a stunning city known for its colorful wooden houses, scenic fjords, and rich history. But before you pack your bags, there are a few practical things to know that will help you enjoy your visit without surprises. From the famously rainy weather to local customs and costs, this guide covers the essentials to prepare you for a smooth and memorable trip.

Expect Frequent Rain and Pack Smart

Bergen is one of the rainiest cities in Europe, with rain on about 220 to 240 days each year. That might sound daunting, but it rarely rains all day long. More often, you’ll experience quick showers or light drizzle that pass as fast as they arrive. The weather can change rapidly, so checking the forecast too early won’t help much. It’s best to look at the weather about five days before your trip.

To stay comfortable, bring a waterproof jacket that you can wear anytime. An umbrella might help, but the wind can be strong near the fjords, so a jacket with a hood is more reliable. Waterproof shoes or boots are also a good idea, especially if you plan to explore the cobbled streets or take a fjord cruise.

How Many Days to Spend in Bergen

The ideal visit length is 2 to 3 days. This gives you enough time to explore the city’s main sights, enjoy local food, and take a fjord cruise if you want. A fjord cruise, especially the popular trip to Flåm, usually takes a full day, so plan accordingly.

If you only have one day, focus on the highlights like Bryggen, the fish market, and a quick ride on the Fløibanen funicular for panoramic views. For those with more time, 4 or 5 days allow you to explore nearby nature, museums, and even day trips to surrounding villages.

Understanding Bergen’s Costs

Bergen is known for being expensive, especially compared to many other European cities. Alcohol prices often surprise visitors. For example:

  • A 0.4L beer or glass of wine costs around £8.50 to £10.

  • A pint of Guinness can be closer to £11.

  • Cocktails are even pricier.

Supermarket prices are high too. A can of Heineken costs about £2.80. You won’t find wine, spirits, or stronger beers in regular shops because Norway restricts sales of alcohol stronger than 4.8% ABV to government-run stores called Vinmonopolet. These stores have limited hours and are closed on Sundays, so plan your purchases ahead.

Respect Local Etiquette and Avoid Blocking Pathways

Bergen’s popular spots like Bryggen and the fish market can get crowded. Locals appreciate when visitors are mindful about space. Avoid walking four people side-by-side on narrow sidewalks. If you want to stop for photos, step to the side instead of blocking the middle of the path. A simple “please” and “thank you” in Norwegian or English goes a long way in showing respect.

This small awareness helps everyone enjoy the city without frustration. Norwegians value personal space and polite behavior, so following these simple rules will make your interactions smoother.

Cash Is Not Necessary in Bergen

You don’t need to carry cash in Bergen. Most places, including the fish market, accept card payments or mobile pay options like Apple Pay or Google Pay. Many locals rarely use cash anymore, so you can travel light without worrying about finding ATMs.

Tipping Is Not Required but Appreciated

Norway does not have a strong tipping culture. Service charges are usually included in your bill at restaurants and bars. Tipping is not expected, but it is becoming more common in tourist areas. If you receive exceptional service, rounding up the bill or leaving a small tip is a nice gesture but not necessary.

Finally—so what if it rains?

There are still so many things to do in Bergen, so many great places to eat and drink, and plenty of cosy local coffee shops to escape into. There’s far too much to enjoy to spend your trip worrying about the weather.

So embrace it and enjoy Bergen 😊
