From Summer to Autumn: August in Bergen

August in Bergen is that in-between month when summer slowly hands the stage over to autumn. You’ll still get long daylight hours — around 16 hours at the start of the month, dropping to about 14 hours by the end. That means plenty of time to explore the city, fjords, and mountains before the evenings draw in.

The weather in August can be a bit of everything. Average daytime temperatures sit around 15–18°C (59–64°F), but it can feel warmer on sunny days — and a lot cooler when the rain moves in (and yes, it will rain!). Showers are common, so don’t leave without a waterproof jacket.

When it comes to clothing, think layers. A light jumper or fleece for cooler mornings, a t-shirt for sunnier spells, and always something waterproof in your bag. Comfortable shoes are a must, especially if you’re planning to walk the cobbled streets or take a hike up Mount Fløyen.

August in Bergen feels like a gentle shift — you’ll still taste summer, but you’ll sense autumn just around the corner.
