Staying in the Cone on Mount Fløyen – My Unique Night Above Bergen

If you’re visiting Bergen and want something a little different from a hotel, I highly recommend staying in the Cone on Mount Fløyen, known locally as Konglen. I recently spent a night there and it turned out to be one of the most unusual and memorable places I’ve stayed.

Perched in the forest on Mount Fløyen, the Cone is a small wooden cabin shaped exactly like its name suggests. It looks like something from a fairytale — a cone suspended slightly above the ground, surrounded by trees and nature.

My First Impression of the Cone

When I first saw the Cone, I honestly thought it looked tiny. But once you climb up the ladder and step inside, it feels surprisingly cozy. There’s a large window facing the forest, a small fold-down table, benches, and mattresses for sleeping.

It’s designed to fit two adults and two children, so it’s not a big space, but that’s part of the charm. The wooden interior makes it feel warm and natural, and you really feel like you’re sleeping in the trees.

One thing I noticed straight away is how peaceful it becomes in the evening. Once the daytime visitors leave the mountain, the forest gets quiet and you can actually hear the wind moving through the trees.

During the Day – Expect Curious Kids

One thing to be aware of if you stay in the Cone is that it sits quite close to the playground area on Mount Fløyen.

During the day, there are lots of families and kids exploring the area, and because the Cone looks so unusual, plenty of children try to climb the ladder or peek inside. It’s clearly something that grabs their attention.

It didn’t really bother me personally, but it’s something worth mentioning so you know what to expect if you arrive early in the afternoon.

Once evening arrives though, it becomes much quieter and the whole place feels much more private. Imagine having Fløyen to yourself. The Fløibanen stops running at midnight so you are pretty much alone.

The Price of Staying in the Cone

The Cone is actually quite affordable considering how unique it is.

A night typically costs around 1,995 NOK for the entire cabin.

That includes:

  • Sleeping space for up to four people

  • Mattresses and pillows

  • Heating inside the cabin

  • Access to nearby toilet facilities

  • Cleaning after your stay

However, you need to bring some things yourself such as:

  • Sleeping bags

  • Food and drinks

  • Warm clothes

  • A flashlight or headlamp

There’s no cooking equipment inside, and open flames like candles aren’t allowed for safety reasons.

How to Rent the Cone

Booking the Cone is fairly simple. You just reserve it through the official website for Fløyen and the Fløibanen Funicular.

Once your booking is confirmed, you’ll receive instructions on where to collect the key before your stay.

Check-in is normally around 3:00 PM, and check-out is before 11:00 AM.

Getting Up to Mount Fløyen

To reach the Cone, you first need to get to the top of the mountain.

Most visitors take the famous Fløibanen Funicular from the city center. The ride takes only about 6 minutes and the views over Bergen on the way up are incredible.

From the top station, the Cone is just a short walk through the forest.

Is Staying in the Cone Worth It?

After spending a night there, I can honestly say it’s one of the most unique experiences you can have in Bergen.

Yes, during the daytime there can be curious kids around because of the nearby playground. But once evening arrives, the area becomes peaceful and you get a completely different experience — sleeping quietly in the forest high above the city.

If you’re looking for something memorable instead of a standard hotel room, staying in the Cone on Mount Fløyen is definitely worth trying.
